We write to you with an appeal to support Maji Mazuri Headstart School in Mathare, where we work tirelessly to provide quality, holistic education to children from some of the most vulnerable backgrounds. For many children in Mathare, education offers the only path out of poverty. Yet, for so many of these children, access to consistent, supportive schooling remains out of reach due to financial constraints.

This October 2024 update from Maji Mazuri highlights the achievements of the past academic year, including student successes in examinations, a memorable pre-primary graduation, and participation in the Nairobi International Book Fair. It also celebrates the impact of the GFC Partners Exchange Program, fostering growth through cross-cultural learning, and the inspiring journey of six-year-old poet Tamira Tamara.

Headstart School had a highly productive academic term, with achievements ranging from a new computer lab boosting digital skills to introducing the cultural game Kho-Kho. Community partnerships beautified the campus and provided learning opportunities. Importantly, the school supported families affected by floods, enabling students to continue their education.

2022 has been a year of great success in our mission to help people escape poverty and become thriving individuals’. Despite several challenges, our programs made a huge difference in the lives of many children, youth and families that we served in 2022.

From July 2022, We are partners of Global Fund for Children (GFC), a global nonprofit that supports community-based organizations to advance the rights of children and youth worldwide. Global Fund for Children supports our organization with flexible funding. The flexibility of GFC funding is important to our work because it gives us the freedom and ability to meet our priority needs and challenges to accelerate our impact.

2021 has been a fair year despite the numerous challenges brought by Covid-19 pandemic. We are glad that despite those challenges, our projects stood strong and continue to transform the lives of young people and families in our community. Francis is a role model for young people and an inspiration to everyone he meets. He is resilient, hardworking, ambitious, and objective-driven. He is passionate about positive change in the community and believes in the power of education to change the world. Today, he is a Program Officer at DIGNITAS - an organization that works with community schools in informal settlements of Nairobi to build teachers capacity so that they can transform children’s’ opportunities.
