Challenging the Gobi Desert for Maji Mazuri!

Written by  Lark Bui

Update: Yes, he did it! Not only did Tony finish the gruelling 155 mile Gobi Desert race, yesterday, but he came in 10th of 125 men and women who completed the race, out of over 150 who started!

What an incredible achievement! The fifth stage, in particular, must have been totally exhausting – 60 miles over ravines, through rural farmland and then through sand dunes. It took Tony 14 hours and 21 minutes. Some people needed more than twice as much time to finish. We are very proud of his achievement, and very grateful that he dedicated this effort to Maji Mazuri.

Those of you who pledged support are most welcome to send your checks, payable to Maji Mazuri USA, to our address – 4783 Summerset Lane, Atlanta, Georgia 30338 – or pay via PayPal link on this site. Those of you who have not yet pledged or sent a gift are very much welcome to do so now!

The full results of the Gobi Desert race can be found at this location at this link.

On 25 June, Hong Kong-based Maji Mazuri supporter Tony Carango embarked on a unique journey to promote awareness of our programs. A veteran of our 2007 Mount Kilimanjaro trek in which we raised over $15,000 in sponsorship funds for Maji Mazuri from some 70 supporters, Tony upped the ante this year by entering the “Gobi March" ultra marathon in western China.

Not only did Tony finish the gruelling 155 mile Gobi Desert race, but he came in 10th of 125 men and women who completed the race, out of over 150 who started! The 7-day race, covered more than 150 miles through the extremely inhospitable Gobi Desert, in temperatures exceeding 110 degrees F.

So, many,  many congratulations and thanks to Tony Carango for his magnificent achievement, and to all Maji Mazuri supporters who pledged to sponsor Tony’s incredible journey!

Please consider becoming a sponsor too. Just US 25 cents per mile would raise $38.75, and $1 per mile would raise $155. You can send a simple e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to make your pledge, pay via PayPal on this site, or mail a check payable to Maji Mazuri USA at 4783 Summerset Lane, Atlanta, Georgia 30338.  100% of your gift will go to Kenya – we make no deductions for expenses of any kind.
