Where Money Goes

Making a Difference

At Maji Mazuri, we believe alleviating poverty by empowering people can transform lives – and we believe it can transform yours, too. Since day one, we’ve been dreaming up ways to connect you with the people you’re helping. Now, we’re taking it a step further.

We track every dollar raised, showing you the projects you helped fund and how you make a difference.

Here’s how this works:

You learn 800 million people on the planet live on extremely meager resources and you decide to do something about it. You give up your birthday gifts or sell lemonade to fundraise for a project. Or, you donate to a friend’s campaign.

We send 100% of your money to the field.

When the campaign closes, we pool your funds with the rest of the money raised on majimazuri.org in that time period. We send 100% of it to the project you have chosen. Our team on the ground picks where it will be used to make the most impact.

When the projects are complete, we prove it.

In the next 18 months, our team in the field implements the projects. When they’re complete, our team sends us the reports and photos for each project so we can show you exactly where your dollars went and how you make a difference.

You Fundraise or Donate.

Maybe you give up your birthday, wedding or holiday gifts, and ask for donations instead. Maybe you hold a bake sale or race in a marathon to fundraise. Or you pull out your wallet and donate to a friend’s campaign. Either way, when your campaign (or the one you donated to) closes, we use 100% of the money raised on majimazuri.org to directly fund projects.

Just a few ways people have raised money:
Giving up birthday gifts
Hosting a dance party
Running a marathon
Having a bake sale at school
Organizing a carwash
Selling lemonade on your block

We send your money to the field.

We work closely with our team in the field to assess which relevant projects have the greatest need.
Then, we pool your donation with other money
raised on majimazuri.org in that time period and
send 100% of it to the project.

Your money is combined with other fundraisers, and sent to the field.

Innovation in health and care for children with special needs.

Saving and improving lives through talent development.

Investing in market-based solutions to end poverty.

Developing innovative, insightful leaders with technology skills.

Workshops, loans and training to advance economic empowerment.

Restoring hope to a community and more.

We start the work.

We select the solution.
We support a variety of different solutions depending on the need, urgency and socio-cultural conditions. For example, right now majimazuri.org is looking at ways to create economic sustainability in each program and ensure in specific projects we are providing a hand up, not a hand out. We carefully survey the situation and determine the best sustainable solution.

The work starts at the community level.
We seek to ensure there is community participation in every project. While we need trained professionals for specific tasks such as physiotherapy for children with special needs, we find ways to ensure there is community contribution in time, labor or in kind donations.

Our team in the field adjust and roll with the punches to build projects.
The work in the field is a complicated business with risks both within and outside of our control — and this is where having smart, skilled, passionate people working in each project pays off. They do whatever it takes to build the project you funded.

In 18 months, a lot of things can happen. Our team adjusts to the best of their ability so they can finish and report back on your project within that time span.

We collect photos + data.

When a project has been completed, we send the field teams out — by motorbike, truck or on foot — to gather the final reports and photos of each community. We work in hard-to-reach areas, so getting to every project can take some time. When all the data is gathered, our partners send us a final report. As we prove out each project, you see the impact your generosity makes.

We assign your dollars to projects.

We get all the data from these projects including the population served, the cost per project, the kind of technology used, how each dollar was spent and photos. We verify it’s correct and enter it in our system. Then we match the money you raised with the projects you helped fund.

You get a report of the project you helped fund.

We create your Project Detail Report, which shows photos and other details about the people you helped. We also publish blogs and news on Majimazuri.org, a public page you can easily share with all your friends.

But the best part of it all… your money does this:

We wanted to make the Maji Mazuri experience exciting and real — something we would all be a part of.

t started in 1984 with Wanjiku’s passion to make a difference, working long hours to start a program that would be different and truly transform lives. Today, hundreds of people around the world have joined the journey. We use 100% of the money raised to fund solutions.

In 2009, we launched majimazuri.org online with a vision to transform the experience of giving. We wanted to make it exciting and real — something we would all be a part of. It’s worked – thanks to you, and your inspiring, creative fundraising campaigns.

You embraced our mission and have changed lives with your generosity and sacrifice. Our goal here is to connect you with the actual communities you’ve helped, so you can see the lives you’ve changed. We’ll continue fighting to bring hope to people in dire need of it, and continue finding new ways to bring you even closer to the people you’re helping.
